Traver Mayfield commissioned into the Marine Corps on January 15, 2011. Following time in the Individual Ready Reserve awaiting a school seat, he graduated from The Basic School with Company A in May 2012.
He then reported to 3d Low Altitude Air Defense (LAAD) Battalion at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, CA. There he served as a Training Officer for on the job training, and graduated from the LAAD Officer Course at Air Control Training Squadron (ACTS). Upon return from ACTS he assumed command of 1st Platoon, Battery B. In 2014 his Platoon attached to Marine Air Control Group-18 at Marine Corps Air Station Futenma, JP under the UNIT DEPLOYMENT PROGRAM. The Platoon conducted numerous Theater Security Cooperation exercises in the US INDO-PACOM Area of Responsibility. Upon redeployment back to 3d LAAD Battalion he served as Assistant Operations Officer and Unit Weapons and Tactics Instructor (WTI).
In 2016 he reported to 2d LAAD Battalion at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, NC. There he served as Assistant Operations Officer, Unit WTI, Operations Officer, and Commander of Battery B. In 2018 he stood up the Marine Corps’ first dedicated Counter Unmanned Aerial Systems (CUAS) Detachment utilizing the prototype variant of the Marine Air Defense Integrated System, and deployed the detachment in support of Special Purpose Marine Air Ground Task Force-Crisis Response-Central Command (SPMAGTF-CR-CC). While a member of SPMAGTF CR-CC the Det conducted CUAS operations in support of OPERATIONs INHERENT RESOLVE and FREEDOM’S SENTINEL.
Upon redeployment in 2019 he reported to ACTS at Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center Twentynine Palms, CA. While at ACTS he has served as LAAD Training Section OIC, Commander of Company C Air Schools, Squadron Operations Officer, and Squadron Executive Officer. He is currently serving as the Squadron Operations Officer, overseeing and facilitating production of 72xx, 59xx, 28xx military occupational specialties, and advanced 23xx training.
His academic accomplishments are a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations, and numerous USMC courses such as Weapons and Tactics Instructor, Expeditionary Warfare School, Command and Staff, and Instructor and Curriculum Developers Course. He has been awarded one Navy Marine Corps Achievement Medal and one Navy Marine Corps Commendation Medal.
